The Logan Whitehurst Memorial Awards for Excellence in Comedy Music include three categories—comedy music video, parody song, and original song. At present, only the nominees are listed on the official site, but the winners were announced yesterday evening. I’ll go through the nominees and winner for each category over the next few days.
I’ve enjoyed a lot of Tom Cardy’s work, so I’m glad to see him back this year, teaming up with also-prolific musician Brian David Gilbert in a Rorschach test that goes to some unexpected places.
I’ll put a content warning on the next couple of videos, the first for some violence (though the video renders it with either cartoonish exaggeration or silly misdirection)…
And as for the second, I’ll just repeat the closing line, “No animals were sacrificed in the making of this video.” The tale of a ghostly roommate/significant other is goofy and wild, and the production values of the video are top-notch…but I have to admit, its final twist is a little much for me. Your mileage may vary.
My personal favorite was this combination of tips for walking down the street and inspiring just the right combination of respect and pity:
But the award winner is “Bucket of Beans” by Kate Micucci, whom you may remember from Scrubs. It’s a lovely homage to the simple pleasures in life. Well, just one simple pleasure, really, and apparently that’s all the singer needs.
More tomorrow!
