What’s harder: to make a funny original song or to make a funny song parody? Depends on who you are and how your mind works. I find writing parodies a bit easier because the work of musical composition doesn’t come naturally to me, so it’s appealing to work with a case where that’s already more or less handled. But a parody has to follow the established “footprints” of the original song, and some writers find that a bit confining.
What’s clear is that the two activities are different beasts, so the Logan Awards have recognized this by putting them in separate categories. The nominees:
“Nurples” — Holy Bongwater (parody of “Circles” by Soul Coughing, some eyebrow-raising fetish talk)
“Unhealthy” — Insane Ian ft Twill Distilled (parody of “Unholy” by Sam Smith)
“Annie is Not Okay” — Matt Storer (parody of “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson)
“Rolling in the Deep (Little Mermaid Style)” — Whitney Avalon (parody of “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele)
And the winner…a longtime friend of mine and Janice who’s always deserved more recognition than he’s gotten…Steve Goodie for “The Sleep Disorder Song” (including parodies of “Sweet Caroline” and “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round,” possibly others I’m missing).
Tomorrow: a micross! Thursday: trying to catch up with DC Comics “events,” when one begins before the last one ends…
