"Exciting new chapters in comics!"

Last night, I got pulled into one of my favorite jobs for the webcomic I edit: picking out its chapter headers.

Pixie Trix Comix is an R-rated comedy, not always “safe for work.” The characters tend to have active sex lives…sometimes with well-chosen partners, sometimes not so much. The main setting is a comic-book store that’s gotten into publishing. (Although there’s a lot of side material about pro wrestling.) Many of the comics its fictional characters publish are real products you can buy at its store or during its Kickstarter campaigns.

When it’s time to collect the online comics themselves into printed books, artist/co-writer Gisele Lagace adds a few illustrations as chapter headings, and co-writer David Lumsdon usually scripts a bonus story.

But neither Gisele nor Dave tend to think in terms of where one chapter should begin or end, or how they should be titled. That part falls to me.

It’s hardly my only job with the series—I do a lot of dialogue-tweaking and plot coaching, too—but like I said, it’s one of my favorites. How come? Well, almost every chapter header is a nod to language familiar to comics fans and would-be comics creators—that also describes the story. I keep thinking I won’t be able to keep this gag going, but if anything, the titles have been getting more comics-y over time, not less.

The last one (direcly above) is not so much a pun as a straightforward description of what’s going on in that chapter. But let Aaron here be proud of his publishing launch. He’s worked hard for it.
